as if our hands could hold the weight of promise

2024

as if our hands could hold the weight of promise is a collaborative live performance between artists Antonius-Tin Bui, Theresa-Xuan Bui, MIZU, Thanh, and Glenna Yu.

The artists activated the Tang’s elevator and staircase with cello, improvisational movement, spoken word poetry, and audience interaction with traditional Vietnamese garments (áo dài). Both performers and audience participate in a migration embodying the hesitations, expectations, and contemplations of returning home.

The poems trace a narrator's journey from survival and reckoning to peace and personal agency. The speaker navigates grief, defiance, and transformation while confronting the weight of history and the complexities of self-identification. Ultimately, they choose to surrender to the present moment, embracing their emotions and healing. Theresa served as co-director, poet, spoken word artist, and movement performer.
