A large field with a small white circle saying ‘Welcome’ stands atop a white pedestal. Outward-pointing feet line its margins, as if, standing on guard. Intersecting footprints enter the scene. From unmarked to star-encrusted, we recognize a transformation.

The household welcome mat sits at the entrance of a space as subtle and seemingly innocent to its audience. It marks a threshold and demands a yielding where one wipes the dirt off their soles to be accepted into another’s domain.

Whiteness adopts the form of the everyday welcome mat to perform the cunning change that occurs when one adopts its elements. All are susceptible to its enticing privileges. None are exempt; no matter what race, sexuality, or upbringing. The work brings light to how whiteness is an active process. It is one’s choice to cross, succumb to its power, be transformed, accept, and uphold its reign.
