One with the prison,
One with the promise,
Together we give each other form

2022

One with the prison, one with the promise, together we give each other form displays a chain of plastic pearls descending from the ceiling, touching the floor, and encased around a stack of books. The pearls are arranged in the shape of a snare-trap and the books are all topics about being Asian-American.

This installation piece performs the complications of creating work around identity, specifically, the topic of race within our racially divisive country. In understanding more about my identity and my own political body, I come to see how our injustice operates systematically. It feels empowering and disheartening, necessary and painful, beautiful and trapped. I wish for a better world where I can be my own, be creative and free, and yet, I cannot deny how the politics of this country have actively shaped who I am. This piece holds no answers and testifies to no absolutes. It works to display these codependent truths.
