To love so freely,

2024

To love so freely, is a site-specific installation by Theresa, created in collaboration with Echo and set within a three-story wooden elevator at the Upper Jay Art Center.

The work combines a poetic soundscape and visuals of improvisational movement, inviting audience interaction through a MIDI controller to manipulate the video’s color, speed, and contrast.

The soundscape features a dialogue from Theresa’s poetry, exploring love, trust, and vulnerability. Warped voices, echoes, and reversed sounds create a sense of claustrophobic introspection, mirroring the complexities of unreciprocated love and the intangible nature of trust.

The visual component presents Theresa performing slow, improvisational movements that evoke the deliberate pacing of someone practicing. These visuals mirror the unwinding, reflective nature of the piece and are amplified by the elevator's confined space, heightening the immersive and intimate quality of the work. The tight quarters intensify the presence of the soundscape and visuals, drawing viewers deeper into the layered exploration of love's complexities.
