I built a pool of gold, so we’d always stay afloat

2022

This performance serves as a reflection on Theresa’s artistic practice, emphasizing how their work is deeply intertwined with the stories of their family, friends, and community. Art is never created in isolation—no one is entirely self-made, and no practice is an act of solitary genius. For their final senior thesis show, Theresa takes a moment to acknowledge and honor those who have shaped their journey.

This performance is inspired by an earlier poem that explores their reasons for creating and writing. The poem is shared below.

I built a gold pool, so we’d always be afloat

Dear Xuan,

We write without certainty

Without question for how

Doubt fades with ink or

Body rests in stone

We – as in I —

Write – as if to breathe,

        to need,

        to prove how

Our heart moves through echos

and my hand speaks through word

I write

with no other purpose than hearing my voice meld with yours

    Two chambers entangled

Pressed against each other as if

    Constantly colliding for the first

    time

    upon time

We learned to touch, to think, to speak

Then talk and walk with an upright confidence as

Straight and concrete as American soil

    where

We either land or we fall

And yet here I am,

I dance and I joke

As if I am home
